2024 Grenache

$38.00

With fruit sourced from bush vines in Blewitt Springs, our 2024 vintage McLaren Vale Grenache was handpicked at optimum ripeness before sending back to our Yarra Valley winery, overnight in cold transport. Quite an effort moving grapes between states, but the fruit from here is both special and unique - so perhaps a labour of love?!

Back at the winery, our fruit arrives the day after picking cool and ready to process. We destem 85% of the fruit and leave 15% whole bunches for freshness and fragrance. After 3 weeks on skins, with minimal pump overs we gently press to tank. Once sugar dry, the wine is racked to 500L puncheons and one of those being a new (10%) Burgundian coopered barrel. Once through MLF our wine stays on lees until spring, at which time we rack and return select barrels, guiding some down a brighter path whilst others provide texture and mouthfeel.

Bottled in December 2024 with minimal tinkering and no filtration, our Grenache displays lifted aromatics of raspberry, musk, blue fruit, dried herbs and hazelnut. There’s lovely mid weighted fruit wrapped around graphite like tannins, guiding the wine to a lengthy finish. Enjoy now or comfortably cellar for another 6 years or so.

Lovely vintage for Grenache! A good year in the vineyard for both growers and makers alike.

  • And this new release Grenache comes from the elevated Springs Hill vineyard. The Whaite family have been farming this Blewitt Springs property since 1975, with bush vine Grenache being later planted (by hand) here in 2007 using only a jackhammer spike and sledgehammer.

The soil in this particular block is complex (and challenging to plant) consisting of ironstone gravel, conglomerate and feldspar over course grained grey sand, which is typical of the district.

For us, Springs Hill Grenache is often the last parcel of fruit to hit our winery. This year, we harvested on March 25th, 2021 and processed the following day after a night in the cool room.

  • We destemmed 85% of our fruit to a single open fermenter whilst the remaining 15% was tipped on top as whole bunches.

After 16 days on skins, when the aromatics were peaking, flavour and phenolics just right, we gently pressed to tank where the ferment finished to dryness before racking to neutral 500L Puncheons for MLF and maturation.

Reflective of our taste and style, we picked our 2022 Springs Hill Grenache at modest baume which resulted in an elegant wine, with just lovely pure fruit and earthiness wrapped around fine grained tannins, a hallmark of this Grenache site.

Whilst the wine is only starting to open and reveal itself now, there’s lifted aromatics of dark raspberry, musk, blue fruit and bay leaf spice. In the mouth, there’s fine red fruits and that distinctive spice note that carries on to the finish.
