Our latest Rouleur Chardonnay is a wine offering fine layers of complexity that will unfold gradually over the coming 6-12 months, and will surely age well over the coming years for those patient enough to wait.
A greater portion of fruit was handpicked from an Upper Yarra vineyard planted in 1976 on the volcanic soils of Seville. Yield was sparse but flavour benefited from lower than average crop. A smaller portion of fruit hailed from a vineyard near the township of Yarra Glen - a site with a southerly aspect and P58 clone, same as the ‘76 planted grapes sourced in Seville.
Whilst Yarra Glen doesn’t have the same depth and drive, it offers a lovely finesse and citrus character that compliments the blend perfectly.
Harvested within 2 weeks of each other, all fruit was handpicked prior to whole bunch pressing, and all the juice being run direct to barrel to commence wild fermentation. We overseeded to ensure a clean, dry finish and stirred our favourite barrels in the latter stages of ferment to build mouthfeel and complexity before sulphuring 90% once sugar dry. The remaining 10% went through secondary ferment adding further layers for us to blend with later in the year. Matured in larger format 500L puncheons, we used 15% new burgundian oak to house the wine over 10 months prior to bottling in late October 2025.
In bottle, there’s a lovely grapefruit pith tang carrying white fleshed nectarine, melon and cashew over hints of flint like reduction. Plenty of mineral acidity is well integrated and supported by a lash of Burgundian oak.
