Grenache is one of our most loved grape varieties to work with and in 2017 we were blessed with exceptional parcels of fruit from two ancient vineyards in both McLaren Flat and Blewitt Springs.

Our McLaren Flat vineyard provides the framework, with gravelly edged tannin and fruit density, whilst our Blewitt Springs site delivers high tone aromatics, plushness and spice. Two vineyards working in sync, providing us wine with unique complexity and style.

Our fruit arrived late in the season in cold transport the day after picking, ready to hand sort at the winery. We opted to use 40% whole bunches on the riper, more powerful McLaren Flat fruit and destem the remaining fruit on top. This parcel was cold soaked, inoculated and left on skins for nearly 1 month with the aim of tempering some structural elements this vineyard so often delivers.

Our Blewitt Springs fruit, with bigger berries and bunches was 100% destemmed, cold soaked and (wild) fermented on skins, then pressed early to retain fruitfulness.

Once pressed, the juice was sent to tank to complete primary ferment and then transferred to barrel for MLF and maturation. We racked our Grenache off gross lees in July and kept both vineyard parcels separate until blending just prior to bottling in late December 2017.

The Rouleur 2017 Grenache presents deep raspberry aromatics over earthen, musk spice and smoke-like sulfides. The palate has firm but integrated tannins overlaid with plush complex fruit, hints of potpourri and whole bunch stems.
