This wine hails from a single vineyard, originally planted by my father (Ivan) in 1984.

Situated at the base of Mount Mary in the lower Yarra Valley this Coldstream site is the sentimental start point for Rouleur - but vintage 2017 signifies the last time we take fruit from the family’s old property. Having finally succumbed to phylloxera, the Douneside ‘old block’ has now been pulled and replanted on disease resistant rootstock to benefit future generations of winemakers.

In vintage 2017 we worked closely with the vineyard manager on 4 select rows in a 20 year-old part of the vineyard. We shoot thinned, dropped fruit and carefully leaf plucked each unirrigated row to ensure only the highest quality fruit was harvested for Ivan’s Pinot Noir.

Grown on compact grey loam over clay, we opted to use the most elevated southern slope of the Douneside vineyard to source our fruit.

Handpicked in the early morning, each bunch was meticulously sorted before a brief cold soak at the winery. One pot fermented wild, whist the second was inoculated after 3 days. We opted for 10% whole bunches and destemmed the remaining fruit on top.

Each ferment was left to it’s own devices with limited winemaker intervention, just a few gentle plunges over the course of 9 days. Once dry, Ivan remained on skins for a further 3 days before pressing gently to tank to settle, and then run to a combination new (30%) and old French puncheons and hogsheads to complete MLF and maturation.

Ivan remained on gross lees for 10 months in barrel and was bottled with no fining, filtration or additions other than sulphur dioxide.

Dads wine shows aromatics of spiced cherry and plum, undergrowth and quality new oak. The palate is textural, sappy and kept linear with a dusting of tannin and bright natural acid. There’s plenty of sour dark and red fruits, graphite and fennel seed spice.
